Facebook's new privacy settings.

They’re a bait & switch.

Users gain the ability to set privacy per post, but lots of control & privacy is lost. You can no longer opt-out of the app platform or beacon. It’s also impossible to set restrictions for your friend list, name, profile photo, gender, networks, pages, or current city. It’s all forced to being publicly available now.

This “public info” and anything set as viewable by everyone is available to any Facebook enabled website or app used by either you or friends. You and your friends will be leaking everyone’s information everywhere they go.

There is no setting to prevent this.

The new public profile also has a permanently public wall displaying most of your recent activity (added friends, liked statuses, etc.) Details on added friends was previously available to non-friends, but only in the timeline after an (unignored) friend request was sent. All this broad access is new.

Your whole profile photo album defauts to ‘everyone’ if you have more than one photo in that album. (or you have just one picture which you haven’t set as your profile image) You can revert this behavior here.

Facebook has a terrible dearth of privacy already; and it just keeps getting worse.

ps: Even if a minor selects “Everyone,” the information they share will be restricted to their “Friends”, “Friends of Friends” and school or work networks.

Hummingbird - The Best Of B.B. King

The first track of the album. My only complaint is that it’s a tiny bit too stereo when you listen to it with headphones. But that’s not an issue if you use speakers. It sounds great, and is mastered well. The rest of the album isn’t consistently as good, but it’s still nice, albeit a bit short. (I will ignore the avant-garde portion of the last track)

ps: It’s available on amazon for really cheap; ignore all the reviews, they were written in the 90’s by old people.

edit: Turn it up, seriously. It won’t sound good at furtively-internetting-without-letting-anyone-know volume.

B.B. King - The Best Of B.B. King (1973) [MCAD-31040 1987 CD Release]

Why this rocks:

1. It has a bad-ass picture of B.B. King.

This Compact Disc contains program transferred from analog tape and therefore may contain some tape hiss and other anomalies that exist with analog recordings.

2. Tape hiss means it’s a direct direct analog transfer and the tracks weren’t run over with a de-noising steamroller that kills the rest of the recording.

This album was assembled and remastered at The Village Recorder, Los Angeles, by Ed Michel and Baker Bigsby, with the assistance of Kathryn King, Dominic Lumetta, Rob Fraboni, Ken Klinger, and Gil Fortis. Throughout, the tracks were recorded and mixed to have their most profound effect at maximum.

3. “Most profound effect at maximum” means they fully used the dynamic range of a CD to more accurately reproduce the loud and quiet parts. It’s not a victim of the loudness war.

This is someone’s Christmas gift.

But together, it sort of loses the punch of the brie.

Note to posers: Brie has no punch. Quality brie is so rich it's practically butter.

Part of my problem in getting on board the college frenzy was that I genuinely believed that any one of the colleges on our approved list of a hundred or so was capable of providing students with a good, even a great, education. The funny thing about teenagers is that very often the best of them, the most interesting and curious, are rather lousy high school students. They have other things on their minds than geeking out every single point on the AP U.S. history exam. They are very often readers, and preparation for elite-college admission does not allow one to be a reader; it’s far too time consuming. These “lousy” students were often among my favorites, and I never feared that they were going to lose a chance at a great education because they didn’t have the stuff of an “elite” admission. They themselves were smart. They didn’t need some Ferrari of a college nudging them along the path to a great education; they were going to get one wherever they went.

Reading The Atlantic makes me feel so much better.
